I was so excited to do a shoot in a Christmas Tree lot! I've had the idea for a few years now, and was inspired by how fun they are for our little family as we pick a tree out each year. It's such a magical time of year, and it was fun to transform my ideas into an actual shoot.

LIGHTING WORKSHOP - LEARNING NEW TECHNIQUES

A few weeks ago, I attending a lighting workshop. It was fun to get out the ol' flash and learn some new lighting techniques with a group of fun photographers.

This was probably my favorite technique of the night. So dramatic, and perfect in black and white.

I love fall. Seriously, you can't take a picture that's not warm and cozy.

Oooo ooo! Sidenote!
During the above shots, we heard this AMAZING, and I'm talking blow-your-socks-off-make-you-close-your-eyes-to-contain-the-beauty amazing, voice singing in an ally behind us. At first we thought it was a recording blasting from someone's car. That's how perfect it was. Then, we saw her. Katie Hull. She was with her daughter and another photographer getting portraits done for her upcoming website. I'll like to it as soon as it's up.

A big thanks to the two couples who froze their tooshies off while we fiddled with the settings on our cameras and flashes to get the right exposures. They were awesome.

CLARKEN FAMILY

You know when you have your flash off camera, 6 feet off the ground, camera left, mounted to an already unstable tripod in a rocky riverbed? (This already sounds good, right?) And then you know how you walk past it after fixing a pose and accidentally knock it over so it falls that 6 feet, busts off the attachment, tumbles on some rocks and then right into the river? Yeah. That happened.

I tried to act all tough and tell them stuff like that happens on location.

Because it really does.

But I'll be honest. I was a little sad mixed with a lot of embarrassed. Not only because my clumsiness was on display in front of clients, but because at that very location, 2 months ago, I dropped my 70-200 2.8 lens and broke it.

I can not be trusted with expensive toys.

The good (and miraculous) news is, that I put the flash in a bag of rice overnight and then in front of a fan for 2 days, and IT STILL WORKS!

And, we still got some really great pictures of this beautiful family.

Seriously, this family is GORGEOUS. And funny. So very funny. I laughed almost the entire session (and yes, there are some blurry pictures that show how much I was giggling).

I love their outfits. I think the cool grays are the perfect mix with the warm fall colors. (and the snowy mountain in the background)

Thanks, Clarken Family! I had a blast, and you were so super nice to work with.

NEW BOOK DESIGN!

I like albums to be fairly simple. Classic, if you will. Designs that you look back on in 5, 10, even 20 years and don't gag. That being said, I took a leap and bought this gorgeous album/book template and love it.

MY FAVORITE AUTHOR AND A PERFECT POEM

My favorite author in the whole entire world is Shel Silverstein. I guess it dates back to 6th grade at Payson Middle School. I had this art teacher, Mr. Bills, who started class each day by reading a poem by Shel. It is possibly the most perfect way to start a class. You see, Mr. Silverstein is, in my opinion, the most creative person in the world, and to start off a creative class with that kind of inspiration, well the combo is priceless.

Recently, I introduced him to my children, ages five and three. And now, each night, we read several poems and I get to see their faces light up, their bellies bounce up and down with giggles, and their inquisitive faces when they don't understand the parodies and humor. It is priceless time with my children. We have already made it through Where the Sidewalk Ends and Falling Up and are now into A Light in the Attic.

Tonight, as I was reading to my oldest, we read the following poem, and it reminded me of cute little Aiden from my last family session. I think this fits him perfectly, and I can't wait to see what he puts into this world. :)

McKenna might be one of my new idols - and she's just 17 years old. The girl is amazing. Not only is she currently under contract as a model and has plans to join the Air Force after graduating, she is one of the sweetest, most down to earth teenagers I have met.

These two gorgeous Brighton High Seniors are what I got to photograph last night. I was actually taking their Senior Portraits, but because they're a couple, and because they are both so amazingly beautiful, I had them pose for one or two together. :)

OUR VERY OWN FAMILY PICTURES

Family pictures have always been important in my life. I grew up with a photographer for a father, so it was just something we always did. But I never knew just how incredibly special they were until I had a family of my very own. Now, each year without fail, we get our family portraits taken by a local photographer. Before you ask, yes sometimes my father does them, but he lives 3 hours away, so it's not always practical.

Here are this year's taken by Sarah Boulter (who was fabulous).

This is yet another reason I hire someone else to take my children's pictures. Because while I get attitude, cries and children who ignore me, they are blissfully behaved when in the hands of someone they don't know.

It's also really hard for me NOT to post this year's Holiday Card. They are at press right now and I can not wait to mail them out. Oh, how I love Holiday Cards.

BLAKE'S GRADUATE ALBUM

Seriously, I wish I had one of these from my Senior Portrait Session. I have no idea where all of my Graduate Pictures are now. And they were fabulous - my Dad took them. Up Payson Canyon, in the SNOW! I'm sure they are split between boxes in my basement and my parents' attic.

Anyways, back to the subject at hand. Have I mentioned how much I love printed products?

Blake chose Watercolor (felt) paper for the interior pages, and her images look just beautiful on such a soft paper. Albums are completely customizable right down to the font on the cover. They will last forever, and probably make your Mom cry. She'll cherish it forever.

Madison is graduating this year from Juan Diego. She's a swimmer with a fun personality and legs that I envy. No, seriously - I am really REALLY jealous of her legs. And shoes. And Dad (he likes to shop).

She is also a TROOPER. No, for reals. See this staircase below? Well it was rickety and covered in piles of pigeon droppings (actual piles that were like 6 inches tall) but she climbed up there like a champ and didn't say anything until she got down. Then, we promptly pulled out the baby wipes and cleaned her up. But the pictures look fabulous!

Congrats, Madison. You're such a cutie, and I'm pretty sure you're going to end up marrying some hot Italian who we all swoon over. Please bring him for a visit. :)

May I just say, we have the coolest library EVER. I *HEART* downtown SLC. Clean, beautiful, full of interesting things. I'm on a quest to do more Urban Parenting, seeing that my own children were so flabergasted with things they saw yesterday that I take for granted. Today's visit included the Downtown Library.

BLAKE - JUAN DIEGO GRAD

Blake is one of the sweetest girls I've met. We had a blast during her Senior Portrait Session, and can you believe that she's never had her pictures taken outside of the standard school pictures snapshot? I mean, holy cow, the girl is a natural!

I wanted to start of with some soft, hazy shots of her and her amazing dog.

Then, we ventured downtown to get some more edgy shots. And when Blake stepped out of the car, sporting her Freshman year tennis uniform, I actually screamed like a little girl. I mean, tennis players are hot!

I'll end with one of my favorite images. Holy cow, I love that dog.

MASON FAMILY

The Mason's are one of those families that inspire me to be a better person, parent and friend. We are one of the lucky ones who get to call these guys our friends.

We met them through the preschool our children attended. Our youngest and their youngest were (and still are) both ultra-smart, independent, strong-willed 2yr olds. So, naturally they are BFF's.

I'm still trying to nail down the final details of an arranged marriage between their oldest daughter and our oldest son. I think there are just a few more points to go over and we can get final signatures. :) It helps that they get along swimmingly as well.

I suckered them into letting me take their family pictures, and we had a blast. Mosquitoes and all.

The following left-hand image was taken by the girls - for reals. I let them push the button on the remote trigger, and they could not push it fast enough. I had no idea my camera took images that rapidly (wink, wink) - hence the laughs from their parents.

I can hardly stand the one of them together below. I honestly stare at it, and they're not even my daughters. Well, not yet anyway.

SUNFLOWERS

Is there anything more beautiful than a glowing field of wheat and sunflowers? How about one with my gorgeous daughter in a white sun dress? :)

I was testing out a new location, and we actually got a few! Which is rare with her and I - we seem to have bad luck.

And the one on the right? My absolute favorite picture of her, and soon to be 16x24 canvas hanging on our wall.

Just for kicks and giggles...this, my friends, is what she is like 75% of the time I try to take her picture. I'm not even going to tell you what I shamelessly had to bribe her with to get smiles.

Lisa is a Senior(!) at Waterford. I can't believe she's a Senior - I've known her for years now, and I feel really old knowing that she's graduating. She was so fun - she and her friend, Tessie (soon to come) are a hoot-and-a-half, I tell ya.

WONDERFULLY IN LOVE

Not only are they wonderfully in love and blissfully happy, they're both beyond brilliant. He has a PhD in Micro Biology (? I think ?), and she's earning hers in Bio Chemistry. They love the outdoors and are close with their friends, so what better setting for their intimate wedding, then on the shores of the beautiful Lake Martha.

Styled by Mother Nature, this wedding was not only breathtaking, it was lighthearted, full of love, and joyful. Each guest was obviously grateful to have these two in their lives, and truly honored to share in the festivities. The ceremony was performed by a dear friend (who flew in from Sweden). He warmed up the crowd with funny antidotes about Michael, and then we all laughed at their playful, yet sentimental vows.

The wildflowers are SO amazing and at their peak right now, so it was fitting that Angela's bouquet was a bright collection of them.

It was truly an honor to be a part of the day. I whole-heartedly loved every minute of it. Even the 1-hour hike to the site. (wink, wink) I kid, I kid. I really did love that hike, it was so beautiful!

ONE OF THOSE SESSIONS...

I've heard about it - I've been waiting for it - and tonight, my friends, I found it. It was just one of those sessions - one if those sessions that helped defined me as a photographer. 4 hours of pure bliss, and I couldn't have asked for better subjects.

These two WONDERFUL girls are seniors at Waterford and we had the best time during their Senior Portraits. They were up for anything. It was a real creative cooperation, which I not only appreciated, but LOVED. They came with ideas, great outfits, amazing makeup and hair, and we had a blast.

Thanks girls. Can't wait to edit and post your sessions.

In the mean time, here is one that I shot while we were in transit from one locale to another.

While the focal point isn't in the correct place, it's fuzzy, and super tight, it shows what great friends you are and how much fun we had.

SIMON AND SHELAYNE ENGAGED

These two are head-over-heels in love, and non-stop giggles. We had so much fun on this shoot, and I can't wait to do their bridals and wedding. I've known Simon for a few years (from my previous life in the printing industry) and I loved Shelayne the minute I met her.

ERICA MATERNITY SESSION

This is the sneak peak I posted last week. Still my favorite image of the night.

I'm so glad that Jeff was up for being in the pictures. Jeff is an amazing photographer, himself. And bless his heart, not only brought his equipment just in case, but also helped me pack mine all around. What a trooper!

My goodness, the light was just amazing that night!

Not only was she 38 weeks at the time, but this amazing mommy-to-be climbed up in the tree at my request. When I was pregnant, this is just the sort of request that would have made me tear up and cry right there on the spot. But Erica just giggled and let Jeff and I put her up there. Then she balanced up there, WHILE IT WAS RAINING ON HER! for about 15 minutes. I'm telling you, she really took one for the team.

Oh, the adorableness (totally a word) of this family! These two little ones were so excited to run all around, we had to shoot fast. How much do you love their outfits?! Well done, Obray family - you've got style.

I remember my first day on the job like it was yesterday. See, it was a huge step in my life. I was just 3 weeks out of high school, I had picked up and moved to a new city, and landed a killer job at the local newspaper as the photo technician.

I was hired by a soft-spoken man who's demeanor demanded respect. He greeted me, then introduced me to the other photographer as well as the writers, editors, and other personnel that I would be working with during my night shift. We then sat down at the Photo Desk and in a very subdue voice, he explained my responsibilities and taught me the basic functions I was going to use in the software they used (I think it was like Photoshop 4 at the time, and coming from a completely analog, film and darkroom history, this was overwhelming!), showed me the dark room (phew, that's more like home) and then watched me work for a while before he let me go for the night.

I was so excited and nervous, I had butterflies in my stomach all the way home.

I remember going home and telling everyone what an amazing teacher my new boss was. I told them how much I had learned in a few short hours. Things I never thought I would be able to do, but after he explained them, the fears melted away and they became second nature. I found myself dying to get back to work to learn more.

Of all the mentors in my life, Nick Adams continues to be one of my ultimate favorites, and I only got to spend one short year with him 13 years ago. (EEK! How time does fly.)

My journey with Nick unexpectedly continued recently. I came across his photo-blog a few months back and shot him off an email. It was so great to touch base with one of the great influencers in my life. He told me of his upcoming seminar at WPPI, which I was unable to attend due to a previously planned trip, but I immediately bought the DVD he recently made.

I literally just walked away from the TV 5 minutes ago after watching "Get Lit!" and wanted to share. YOU MUST BUY IT. If there is ever a DVD to buy to get you started, brush up your skills, or learn a few new tricks with lighting, it's this one. Nick Adams continues to be a fabulous mentor - even if it is via DVD . I took 4 pages of notes, constantly pausing the DVD to finish writing, and I plan on watching it several more times. I can't wait to get out there with my lights and put what he taught into practice.

True to form, Nick makes it easy to understand some complex lighting techniques with up to 4 lights. His approach is two fold: One - he talks about each concept and light set up, explaining the why's and where's, showing graphics with the layout of his lights. Two - cue to "On Location," where he actually shows you the lighting set up with an actual model and then shows you the resulting image. What this 2-prong approach does for you, the photography student, is give your brain two completely different ways process the information making it easy to understand and implement.

JAKE GARN WORKSHOP take one

Get ready for a longer-than-usual post.

Seriously. I took SOOOOOOO many pictures.

This workshop was so much fun. I showed up late (not remembering that Layton was 45 minutes away, not 20) and slid into a seat in the back row. I hate being late. Plus I was a tad bit nervous.

This was my first workshop, and there were some pretty big names there, as far as photographers in Utah go. It was super exciting to meet and see in action Jake Garn (of course) and Ryan Muirhead (Jake's right-hand man).

And what incredible models!!! Really, I can't take any credit at all for these images. These girls were so amazing, and the workshop was run so smoothly, that all I had to do was dial in my camera, attach my pocket wizard, and hit the button.

The stylists were out of control. Seriously. These people are amazing.

TANNER - OLYMPUS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR

Tanner was the first person to welcome us to our new street when we moved into our house. He knocked on the door, said his welcomes and offered up his Mom's services should we need anything. I remember it like it was yesterday - I was stricken. He was this adorable 7-year old, who was clearly not intimidated by anyone, spoke like he was 10 years older than he really was, and just completely charming. Now he's all grown up - graduating from Olympus High and headed off to follow his dreams of dental school.

Tanner is all smiles, all the time. It took a lot of concentration to look serious.

My baby girl turned 3 today. Sweet and spunky, this girl lights up our life. I wanted to get some pictures out in the blossoms before they all go away. We are expecting ANOTHER snow storm tomorrow and that means bye-bye blossoms. :( So, even though it was crazy-windy, we snagged a few shots of her. Man, if only the wind wasn't blowing at 100 miles/hour, these could have been amazing. But they work.

Yes, I realize this is a crotch shot, but it just screams Joclyn's little personality. She loves animals - especially if there is a mommy/baby set.

Here are some of my favorites shots of the house. I love the exterior. The horizontal wooden siding on the garage is beautiful.

These two are master chefs - I'm not kidding - they are amazing cooks, so this kitchen is the perfect place for them to whip up dinners and key lime pies for their friends...shall we say every other Friday night?

I love the airiness (totally a word) of the entire home. Bright windows and white walls make everything seem so open and clean.

I mean, really?!? I would never get out of this bathtub. EVER.

The coolest stairway EVER. It takes a little getting use to if you're rushing up or down the stairs, but amazing.

MAZZA - COMMERCIAL SHOOT

LOVE the feel of Mazza. It is beautiful and warm, yet clean and crisp. I shot Mazza with Sawaya Consulting, who is always amazing to work with, for some upcoming Ads. We even roped in a previous face. The Mazza staff was amazing to work with, too. They are a real class act in there.

Don't you just want to snuggle in and have a long conversation with a friend you haven't seen in a while?!

I loved the simple table decor and floral arrangements.

I hear the food is amazing as well. Being a vegetarian, I opted out of the dishes ordered for the shot. :)

SHOOTING IN FULL SUN

It's almost spring time! This beauty let me sucker her into taking her picture. Before yesterday, I had never shot in full sunshine in the middle of the day. Not sure how I get so lucky, but every photo shoot I've ever done, I get an overcast sky with rain....or snow. I'm not complaining - it makes for really soft light.

But I have to say, I'm a big fan of full sun this week. I might just be a convert.

FLUID HEART...COMING SOON

So, here's the deal. I'm not the most in-shape gal around. I'm just not, and I'm okay with that. I love Dr. Pepper too much - and that battle is another story. But last summer, I decided to quit my full-time job of 10 years. With some of that extra time, a friend and I started going to the gym almost every day. Both of us are very type-A, most comfortable in fast-paced business environments, and very restless (to put it mildly). Doing 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weights every day just wasn't going to keep us interested enough to keep going. We thought it best to switch it up every day and do something new. We had a short stint with racket ball, a longer one with Zumba, and one Tuesday, she dragged me (yes, dragged me) to a Vinyasa Yoga class she had tried the week before.

I had been to yoga before. It was boring. I was only doing this because we didn't know each other quite well enough for me to protest that early on in the game. I had to act somewhat tough and reasonable if I wanted to keep her as a gym buddy, and better yet, as a friend.

That first class about killed me. I had NEVER worked that hard in my life, and I played soccer in high school. Stick me on a treadmill and make me run for hours, but please don't make me go to that class again! Sweat was dripping down from my chin onto my mat (which led do a couple of slippery falls), I was shaking, and I was nauseous. I was ready to call that my one and only try. But again, didn't know my friend well enough yet to be a quitter, so when she suggested it the following Tuesday, I happily (not) complied. And that led to me enduring a few more weeks after that.

One day, it was 4th class, I started noticing that I was actually enjoying the way the asanas (yoga poses) were feeling. And even more - how fun the flows were! Oh man, now I was noticing how great the music track was! That downward dog felt so relaxing! Why did I think I was going to break my wrist in downward dog last week? Wow, did you see that vinyasa I just pulled off? And ahhhhhhhhh, that savasana was HEAVEN - I think I might be able to take on the world today.

All of the sudden, yoga wasn't that boring class I had once taken. This yoga class was full of movement, strength, soul, and amazing music. This was Krisin's Vinyasa Yoga class. And I have been going twice a week (showing up early to fight for a spot in that oh-so-full Tuesday morning class) ever since.

You may remember the teaser post (here) about Kristin launching her website soon (oh, and us trying to freeze her out there barefoot and in tank tops, in February, in the desert). I'm so excited for her and the creation of Fluid Heart. I know I said I would wait until the site was up to share the rest of the images, but I just couldn't wait. I finally got through editing over 130 images out of the 700'ish we took over the course of 2 days, and wanted to share a few of my favorites.

Here she is. One of the most amazing women I've had the pleasure of knowing. And I'm honored to now call her a friend.

WHERE HISTORY IS MADE

He just graduated law school, took the bar, and is now applying for JAG positions. Neither one of us had ever been inside the state capitol building, so it was kind of an amazing experience.

I always pictured the capitol building bustling with men and women in suits, talking and typing into their Blackberries simultaneously, trailed by frazzled assistants dropping folders of paper. Turns out, we were almost the only people in there. Kind of a let down.

What wasn't a let down, was the breath-taking beauty of the building. Amazing. They just don't make them like that anymore. All of the extraordinary little details carved out of granite and wood. Here is a tiny taste.

If you read my personal blog [private, but holla if you want in on it] you've seen the extensive version of last weekend's festivities. My good friend, Amber, turned 30. We have a little tradition in our circle of friends, to celebrate your 30's in style. While I chose a more... "rowdy" party in Vegas, Amber chose a serene beach house in Oceanside. It was AMAZING.

Wonderful friends, food, lounging, walks to the pier, yoga on the roof, and amazing sunsets. My goodness, I love the ocean.

SUNRISE, SNOW CANYON & YOGA

I don't often hear roosters crowing when I wake up. But on this special day, I did. We all woke up before dawn to take in the beauty of the sunrise in Snow Canyon this weekend. You see, our amazing Vinyasa Yoga teacher, Kristin, is about to launch her website. We went in search of *warmer* weather, although I wouldn't call what we found "warm." As Amber (Sawaya Consulting) and I sported down coats, Kristin was a warrior in tank tops and bare feet on the cold sandstone.

After her site launch, I will share the rest of the images. But for now, here is some of her awesomeness.

FINDING THE BEAUTY IN WINTER

So, really. January and February are BRUTAL months of the year for me. Salt Lake is nestled in a gorgeous valley of majestic mountains, which I'm so grateful for and couldn't imagine living away from. However, something not-so-majestic happens in January - the inversions come. And when the inversions set in, things get down-right depressing. We are finally getting a few days of sunshine, so I wanted to get out of the winter phunk and find some beauty. More specifically, find the beauty in winter right in my backyard.

This one almost looks like spring...

I have a thing for an old swing that was here when we bought the house. The paint was peeling back then, 8 years ago, so you can imagine how it looks now. Rob thinks we just need to replace it, but I can't bring myself to get rid of it.

Through our backyard and across the street, there is a water reservoir, and some old picnic tables that have completely fallen apart. I really liked the colors.

And this, my friends, is a sick joke that nature plays on me every mid-February. Every year, I get excited spring is coming and winter will come to a screeching halt. No such luck. These poor sprouts will have to live through a few snow storms before they finally bloom into daffodils.

THE STORY OF WINTER

I love this picture. It's the story of a perfect Winter day at our house. I love that little "J" is building her snowman just right, while the boys are having a snowball fight in the background. There's always an inversion in January here in Salt Lake - it gets downright depressing, actually - so it's nice to beat the cabin fever with a little fun in the snow.

This is one of the best books on Photography I've ever read - and lately, I've been reading a lot of them. Even though Joe is one of the best and most published photographers around, he reads like he is one of your best friends. Just down to earth and easy going.

I would give my right arm just to be the girl that gets his coffee in the mornings on his photo shoots. Then I would smile real pretty so he wouldn't fire me and gather as many little golden nuggets of information as I could. Love him.

LEARNING ABOUT THAT SKI LIFT

This is my 4-year old. He learned how to ski last month. This is a little sequence of him getting on the chair lift for the first time.

Whoops! Almost lost him there. But don't worry, instead of freaking out, I was snapping away using my new lens. :) He stayed extremely calm throughout the whole incident, and as soon as his teacher realized I was calm as well, she just started laughing. Then yelled from the lift, "I can honestly say that was a first!"

NEW YEARS IN STYLE

This is my good friend, Amber. She's amazing. Seriously. Everything she touches turns to gold. Never mind she's the hardest working person I know, she's beautiful, fun, classy, a fabulous designer [designed my logo, in fact] and keeps me motivated to go to the gym every day. She throws a good party, too. What's not to love about this girl? Here's a taste of our small New Years Eve dinner party. Eight of our closest friends getting together for a nice, warm, quiet evening and gourmet food.

And just in case the gourmet food, china, hand polished silver, and candles weren't enough, she personalized each of our table settings with something that represented our year in 2009.

Her hubby was a farmer this year - grew a ton of potatoes and other goodies in their amazing garden. Together, they own a business, and well, Amber loves her white board. :)

My hubby can't get enough Raspberries. I turned 30 and Amber designed a very meaningful, special tattoo for me. :)

I've known Jason for almost 10 years - we met when I was a Fine Paper Rep and he was working as a designer at a firm here in SLC. Years later, we ran into each other again at our kids' school, only to find out our boys were BFF's. We had so much fun on this shoot, and Kari, man - she just makes me laugh. You should have seen their Christmas Card [designed of course, by Jason]. So amazing.
